The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. - Preamble to Lib Dems Federal Constitution
Durham County Council have begun consulting about the proposed development of 2 new academies in Derwentside to replace the existing 5 secondary schools in the area. In Consett this would mean the closure of Consett Community Sports College and Moorside Community Technology College, and in Stanley the closure of Tanfield School - Specialist College of Science and Engineering , Greencroft Business and Enterprise Community School and Stanley School of Technology...
Derwentside Liberal Democrats held stalls on both Consett and Stanley markets recently. Energy efficiency light bulbs were given away to those eligible. Leaflets were available giving information on Citizens Advice Bureau, and Warmfront, a government funded scheme offering grants towards insulation and heating of homes....
Durham County’s Labour cabinet is to spend more on yet another report into the Sports Centre project after already spending about £70,000. .
The Consultants say council tax- payers need to know if they are paying more to build the sports centre because of the Project Genesis monopoly. They say we also need to know if we will pay more charges and fees in the fu- ture because of the Project Genesis monopoly. Lib Dems agree with that....

North West Durham Liberal Democrats have selected their prospective parliamentary candidate for the next General Election. He is Owen Temple, Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Consett North and former group leader on Derwentside District Council.
It’s neck and neck here in the North East as the Lib Dems campaign to re-elect Euro MEP Fiona Hall. Fiona won her seat by 6,000 votes last time out of a population of 2 million voters. Labour are going flat out to take the seat back so it’s vital to get out and vote. The Tories don’t have a chance. It’s us or the usual Labour “ don’t listen don’t care we always get elected up here” viewpoint. Vote for Fiona Hall on June 4th. Re-elect someone who works hard in Europe for our area.
The 2.94% hike in council tax across County
Durham broke the much repeated promise
that big savings in the new unitary council
would allow reductions in council tax.
Lib Dem financial analysts discovered several
hidden pots of money that could have been
used to keep the council tax down, but the
council didn’t want to know.
When it’s your money they’re taking this is the “Stash the Cash Council”. When it’s something
they want it’s the “Splash the Cash Council”.
That’s what we call the worst of both worlds.
The people of Derwentside were rightly
shocked when they heard that £7
million of council money was at risk
through the fall of the Icelandic Banks.
The good news from the Local
Government Association is that it
estimates at least £6.3 million will be
recoverable if the current legal advice is
right. That says Icelandic law puts local
councils high in the queue for repayment.
